The check it out engineering process is a series of steps engineers take to solve a problem. This includes determining the objective as well as determining constraints, planning, building and testing. This is a critical aspect of every project we undertake at TWI. It helps us ensure that our projects comply with the highest standards for safety and performance. This is especially important for New York City project as they must meet stringent specifications.
During this phase students research the issue they’re faced with to understand what the challenge is and gather data. This is an open, student-centered approach to science that reorients classrooms away from traditional instruction.
At this stage, students brainstorm ideas about how they can solve the problem. This can be accomplished using software, whiteboard writing or even discussions. It’s okay if certain ideas do not work. They can try other methods and test them.
After analyzing the results of their research and brainstorming, the group chooses a solution to design and construct. It could be done on paper, with CAD software, or even through an idea that can be physical or virtual. This is a great step for students because they can create something tangible that will allow them test their ideas.
This is where the rubber meets the road for engineers because they have to stay within the constraints that are imposed upon them, including cost, time tools, resources, and many more. Engineers must also keep in mind that their solutions must be safe and effective to be able to be utilized in the real world.
